About this Item: J. S. & C. Adams/J. H. Butler, Amherst/Northampton, 1841. New Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Orra White Hitchcock, H. J. Van Lennep, and J. Peckham (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto (9 x 11 1/2), xii, 831 pp. plus 55 lithographic plates consisting of 2 folding geological maps (including one very large hand colored geological map of Massachusetts dated 1841); 2 folding geological profiles (one with some hand coloring); 14 attractive lithographic views of Massachusetts scenery (1 folding); and 37 plates of fossil remains (some large folding). In recent black cloth with gilt spine title and black endpapers. Maps and plates by Thayer's Lithography, Boston, with plates based on sketches drawn by the author's wife, H. J. Van Lennep, J. Peckham, Miss M, and others (?) (unsigned). *** Hitchcock's final and most complete summation of his landmark geological survey of Massachusetts - the first geological survey in the U. S. completed under State auspices. Begun in 1830, the survey would last 10 years and consume much of Hitchcock's energy, both in the field and office. Of special paleontological interest, the work contains some of the earliest published illustrations of the famous dinosaur tracks from the Connecticut River valley, then thought by Hitchcock to be the fossil footprints of birds. These tracks were first discovered by Dr. James Deane who brought them to the attention of Edward Hitchcock. Hitchcock first published a paper on the subject in the American Journal of Science in 1836, later expanding his studies to include a list of 27 "Ichnolite" species found in this report. He considered the tracks to be made by bipedal animals but some were designated as "sauroidichnites" indicating quadruped-like traits similar to a saurian reptile. *** The exquisite topographical view plates include: Pulpit Rock on Monument Mt.; View from Mount Holyoke; View of North Adams; Gorge Between Holyoke and Tom; A View in Hadley; Valleys of Erosion on Mt. Holyoke (folding); Stockbridge Pond; View Toward Haverhill; View from Saugus, Towards Lynn; Turner's Falls; Holyoke's Falls in Montague; Great Falls on Westfeld River in Russell; Gorge and Falls in Royalston, N.W. Part; and Bashapish Lower Falls Mt. Washington. *** Condition: New black cloth boards and matching black endpapers. Binding tight, edges uncut. No ownership markings or stamps. Usual light scattered foxing to text and plates though limited mainly to blank margins; many plates are clean. The impressive large color geological map has an opening tear that extends horizontally 1/4 of the lenght of the map but otherwise condition is excellent. Marcou 204. Seller Inventory # 000412
