One of the few large-scale American chromolithographic works produced during the Civil War period, and probably the best such work created in 19th- Century America. Van Lennep had been a missionary in Anatolia since 1840 and "produced these fascinating costume drawings in oils largely of the Armenians there, also of Greeks and Jews.
