Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition
Hardcover. First Edition. 12 x 15" faux brown leather over boards stamped in black, red, gilt, and tan horse and carriage designed. The book is bound with string and contains 50 tan leaves. This scrapbook is dedicated to the Clinton High Football team of Clinton, New Jersey from 1945-6, created by Grace Van Varick. The Clinton Mustangs had an impressive 1945 season and were undefeated in 1946 when they became the first state champions. The majority of the album is made of newspaper clippings, featuring photos of the team, and articles on the games, team, players, coaches, and community events related to the team. Some of these clippings include handwritten notes, such as players names and words that are cut off. Also included is memorabilia related to the team, including 9 game programs from the 1946 season. The programs are labeled with handwritten notes about the scores, and are from both home and away games. Several pieces of the goalposts are taped in, with handwritten notes identifying what games they came from and what the score was. A ticket to the 1946 Oyster Bowl is included. This postseason, invitational, charity game between Clinton and Granby High took place in Norfolk, Virginia, and was the only Clinton loss of the year. Also included is a "Beat Garfield" flier signed by players. Three black and white photographs measuring 2.75 x 4.5" of players Larry Duca, Bob Boettcher, and Hal Colrizzi are also taped in. These are hand labeled with the players names on the front, and are from the 1945 season. Several players from the 1945 and 1946 teams would continue to play football. Harold "Hal" Corizzi would play college football at Rutgers and Bob Boettcher would play for a Brooklyn based professional team. Ted Kukowski would play for Syracuse and Navy, and be drafted by the New York Giants. Ray Malvasi would play for West Point and later serve as head coach for the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams. Overall, the book is in very good condition. There is some wear to the front cover along the edges and on the front crease. The interior is time toned, particularly the tape used to attach materials. The pages are somewhat brittle and many have chips of up to ½ inch. However, the clippings, photos, and other memorabilia are unaffected.
