Lodovico Melzo (1558-1617) est né à Milan dans une importante famille milanaise. Il est devenu membre des Chevaliers de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem et représente le soldat italien professionnel de l'époque. Il était lieutenant général de la cavalerie espagnole aux Pays-Bas à la Trêve de 1609. Les très belles planches montrent des cavaliers, des scènes de bataille, des dispositions de troupes et des exercices, etc. différents paysages avec arbres, des villages, des châteaux etc. travaillant dans les champs. Ce célèbre ouvrage sur l'équitation militaire a été publié pour la première fois en italien à Anvers en 1611. Il a été traduit en anglais, espagnol et allemand ainsi qu'en français, il s¿agit ici de l¿édition anversoise de 1615, avec une reliure (probablement d¿époque) en parchemin et en bon état, les cordons qui fermaient l¿ouvrage ont cependant disparus.
