Déchu de la nationalité russe en 1975, il la retrouva en 1990. Sa carrière de musicien fut, chose rare, mise au service de compositeurs vivants tels Chostakovitch, Prokofiev ou encore Dutilleux, Britten et Lutoslawski En hommage à ce violoncelliste, chef d orchestre et compositeur hors du commun disparu le 27 avril 2007, Un silence inspiré offre un entretien inédit du musicien. Mstislav Rostropovitch y évoque notamment sa découverte de la musique, de sa sonorité et du silence, indissociable de sa recherche musicale. Il décrit la relation très intense qui lie l interprète au compositeur et, au-delà, au public. Il parle aussi du rapport étrange de la musique à la mort: entend-on de la même manière un morceau après la disparition de celui qui l a créé ? Celui-ci ne sonne-t-il pas différemment ? Les témoignages d Étienne Vatelot, luthier et complice du musicien pendant cinquante ans, et de Nina Apreleff, son interprète en français, ainsi que des photographies viennent compléter cet hommage. Un silence inspiré est l occasion d écouter, une fois encore, à propos de la musique et de ses mystères, la parole essentielle d un des musiciens les plus doués de son temps. A marvelous example of this wonderful book, made all the more wonderful by the full-page inscription by the author, and scarce thus (this is the only signed copy we were able to find either in commerce or auction records).
