Le débarquement des émigrés ŕ Quiberon débuta le 23 juin 1795 et fut définitivement repoussé le 21 juillet. Organisé afin de pręter main-forte ŕ la Chouannerie et ŕ l'armée catholique et royale en Vendée, cette opération visait au soulčvement de tout l'Ouest de la France afin de mettre fin ŕ la Révolution française et de permettre ainsi le retour de la monarchie. Cette opération militaire de contre-révolution eut un grand retentissement, et porta un coup funeste au parti royaliste. ''Le comte de Vauban, qui s'était gravement compromis dans les menées vendéennes, était en état d'arrestation et rédigea alors dans sa prison , des mémoires apologétiques de la guerre de la Vendée. Avec, ou sans permission, son manuscrit lui fut enlevé, et communiqué au chef de l'État. Napoléon, qui désirait de tout son'c?ur la pacification de la Vendée, vit qu'on pouvait tirer un trčs grand parti de ces Mémoires écrits par un des hommes les plus dévoués ŕ la cause des Vendéens , en y faisant toutefois des altérations que la politique réclamait. Une proposition d'élargissement fut faite au comte de Vauban, ŕ condition qu'il abandonnerait son manuscrit; et la proposition fut acceptée par lui. Les Mémoires du comte de Vauban furent remis ŕ Alpli. de Beauchainps, qui les arrangea d'aprčs les instructions qu'il avait reçues , et compromit par lŕ te nom de Vauban prčs des royalistes.''
