Geboren in Jogyakarta (Midden-Java) in een eenvoudig Indo-Europees milieu slaagde hij erin de koloniale kleurbarrière te doorbreken en klom hij op van klerk…tot persmagnaat. Trok hij al als journalist sterk de aandacht, beroemd werd hij om zijn in 1917 in Batavia opgerichte persbureau Aneta. Het haalde de kolonie definitief uit haar isolement en is van immense betekenis geweest voor Indië en het moederland. Vanwege zijn overrompelende ondernemerschap, flamboyante levensstijl en opzichtige liefdesleven was Berretty een veelbesproken figuur in de om haar roddelcultuur toch al zo beruchte kolonie. Affaires en conflicten vormden zowel in zijn zaken - als privéleven een onlosmakelijk deel van zijn bestaan. Zijn megalomanie alsook pathologische behoefte aan erkenning en bewondering brachten hem onder meer tot de bouw van de gigantische - nog steeds bestaande - Villa Isola in de buurt van Bandung. In 1934 kwam hij, slechts 43 jaar oud, om bij de beruchte vliegtuigcrash van de Uiver in de Syrische woestijn. Hij 'stierf zoals hij had geleefd, opzienbarend', schreef een vriend. In de pers werd hij herdacht als 'een van Indië's grote zonen'. Een groots en meeslepend leven handelt over het leven van een fascinerende persoonlijkheid tegen de achtergrond van de snel veranderende koloniale samenleving in de decennia van vlak voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
