Large octavo, well illustrated with monochrome and colour plates, a small marginal tear to page 57/58, otherwise extremely clean internally, original green cloth a little faded, slightly frayed at the spine head, a duplicate from East Malling Rsearch Station with their stamp on the front endpaper and a shelf label on the spine. With an internal label stating thaty the book was presented by Sir Ronald Hatton, and with his signature. [Hatton was a noted horticulturist and pomologist, and was Director of East Malling for thirty years, from 1918 to 1949. During that time he greatly expanded both its size and its range of activities. His principal achievement was the rationalisation, standardisation and classification of rootstocks for fruit trees. His work led to the establishment first of the Malling series, and later, in collaboration with the John Innes Horticultural Institution, of the Malling-Merton rootstocks for apples.].
