"The Brown Frontier" is a collection of 13 "stories and studies" covering the period from 1806 to 1877, a time when hostilities beween Maori and the early European arrivals on NZ shores. inter-tribal conflict, and later hostilities betten the Maori and European settlers and troops made Aotearoa a place of danger, and death. Territorially, his chapters are set in the North Island, from the Far North to the Taupo area. A number are located in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, where Vennell worked as a journalist, while also pursuing his historical research. Given the anger and violence of the time under study, many of the stories have elements of violence, revenge and, abduction as well as of courage, loyalty and mercy.
