La sua forma ideale di vita è all'interno di quel luogo di formazione e di iniziazione ai misteri della femminilità che è il tiaso, la scuola in cui le fanciulle, sotto la sua guida, imparano soprattutto a rimanere interiormente fanciulle per sempre. Nel chiuso riservato del tiaso il vivere femminile con il suo eros particolare trascorre al riparo da tutto ciò che è a esso contrario e disforme; al riparo anche dai perturbamenti della fama. La luminosa Saffo preferisce rimanere oscura. Pur tuttavia, nonostante il suo ostinato rifiuto nei confronti di ogni forma esteriore di riconoscimento alla sua gloria poetica, è solo nell'appartenenza alla dimensione della poesia la condizione del suo destino. E lo stesso suo legame con Alceo è di natura squisitamente poetica e in tale senso va interpretato: sarà proprio Saffo ad ammetterlo in un incontro con lui. Nonostante ciò, Saffo non rinuncia alla sua scelta di fuga e decide ugualmente di "lasciarsi andare" verso la sparizione.
