Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Verdizotti, Giovanni Mario; Vecellio, Tiziano (attr.) (illustrator). Third Edition. De i più illustri antichi & moderni autori Greci & Latini. Pp. [1] f.e., [4], 301 (correctly 299, i.e. A1-T6), [6], [1] r.e. Eighteenth-century morocco binding, with gilt fillet borders on the boards and a spine with five raised bands and a red leather label with the title in gold; gilt edges. The binding has been professionally restored to improve the structural soundness of the volume. Marbled endpapers. Woodcut headpieces and initials. Margins are slightly short, probably as a result of the eighteenth-century rebinding. On the title page, the usual wording in the lower margin, ?con privilegio,? is lacking due to trimming. All 104 woodcuts are present: the engraved title page, the Astronomer, the illustration to the introductory fable (p. 11), and to the following 100 fables. Trimming at the upper margin occasionally affects the page numeration. Despite this, and thanks to the originally ample margins, both text and illustrations are in excellent condition. Woodcuts very fresh; a clean copy, bright and with well preserved paper. Overall a very good copy. Illustrated fables by a pupil of Titian: 100+ woodcuts reveal an unexpected facet of Renaissance artistic brilliance. Verdizotti, a close associate and pupil of Titian, authored both the texts and the woodcut images for this rare but renowned collection of fables, which stands as a high point of Venetian Renaissance illustration. The volume brings together one hundred moral fables, each accompanied by its own xylographic table, drawn from ancient and more recent sources and uniting Aesopic narrative with Renaissance humanist ethics. Animals, mythological figures, and exemplary characters appear within carefully constructed landscapes that reflect the artist?s background. The work enjoyed wide circulation and lasting success, owing to both the appeal of the texts and the quality of the illustrations, and it continued to be reprinted into the later seventeenth century. The present third printing corresponds closely in form and content to the first edition of 1570 and the second of 1575. The two texts represent a mature phase of the Flemish humanist's scholarship and are beautifully illustrated with plates that accompany the principal themes of the discussion. These engravings in the first book depict scenes of games with notable detail and expressive intensity. The very first image quite literally sets the table: it presents a Saturnalia feast, with laurel-crowned men barefoot and reclined around a table, while gladiators fight nearby. The second illustrates gladiators fighting while a funerary pyre burns, with spectators and a large crowd gathered behind them. Then follow representations of various types of combatants, classified according to nationality, weapons, or whether on horses or chariots, as well as women and little people. Finally, the fighting scenes move into the amphitheaters in the following images, with men and women in the stands, several fighters in the arena, and the fights becoming increasingly gruesome table after table. The focus of the second work shifts to the celebrated architectural forms that served as the stage for these spectacles and festivities, monuments whose mastery of design has allowed them, in many cases, to survive for nearly two millennia. Adding to the beauty of this edition, the text includes passages set in the Greek alphabet and in epigraphic style.

[8], 301, [9]pp. Nineteenth-century green morocco, triple gilt fillet, spine gilt in compartments, lavish inside gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. (minor rubbing to headcaps and at joints and extremities). Venice: Giordano Ziletti, First edition of Giovanni Verdizotti?s extremely popular and much-reprinted collection of rhyming fables, with a proliferation of superb woodcuts; according to Ziletti?s address to the reader they were designed by Verdizotti himself, who drew them directly on to the block for the cutter - ?disegnate del legno di sua propria mano? Ziletti explains in his address that Verdizotti was influenced by Gabriello Faerno?s Fabulae centum of 1563; indeed, the first fable here, of the father, son and the donkey was Faerno?s hundredth. Mortimer explains, ?Of the hundred fables, thirty-seven of Faerno?s subjects are not in Verdizotti. ?less than half of Verdizotti?s woodcuts bear any resemblance to the Faerno engravings. Where there are any similarities, the position of an animal may be the same but the background obviously different, as though varied intentionally? The pastoral backgrounds in these woodcuts have been thought to provide a clue to the nature of Verdizotti?s other work, little of which now survives. Beyond these woodcuts and a signed ink drawing Verdizotti has left little trace, though he was praised by contemporaries including Vasari, Ridolfi and Dolci (Met, ?Cento Favole Morale?). Born in Venice between 1525 and 1530 and describing himself as a churchman, he is thought to have acted as Titian?s secretary after the death of Aretino; several of Titian?s surviving letters have been identified as being in Verdizotti?s hand (Tietze-Conrat, 117-123). Provenance: Colour armorial bookplate of Giovanni Marchetti (1817-1876) of Turin to rear pastedown, with motto 'Constantia et Labore'; his sale, Sotheby's, 27 Nov. 1876. Venice: Giordano Ziletti, 1577. 4to, (4), 301, (8, index)pp. Architectural woodcut title border with Ziletti's device, woodcut of an astrologer and 100 woodcut illustrations by Verdizotti. Early Italian polished calf, central blindstamp probably just decorative, gilt supralibros on upper cover of crossed keys (Papal?). A little worn and scuffed, joints repaired, but a very respectable copy of a rare and very important book. ? Second Ziletti edition (third overall) of Verdizotti's fables; he is mainly remembered for his friendship with Titian. ?Ziletti notes that Verdizotti made use of Gabriello Faerno's Fabulae centum (Rome, 1563). Faerno's hundredth fable is that of the man, the boy, and the donkey, used by Verdizotti to preface his collection. The Faerno engravings are said to be after Titian, and some of Verdizotti's designs are also attributed to Titian.? See Adams V-401 (same collation as the 1570 edition); Brunet V:1130; Mortimer Italian 523. The provenance of this copy is of interest: the front pastedown bears the ink inscription ?H.I.R. Giovanni Pandolfi Eysenmans? and beneath ?Vedizelli? in the same hand, also the green leather bookplate of Georges Flore and Genevieve Dubois, a small white bookplate being a line drawing of two doves (?), and finally a bookseller's label ?Lamy, pp., Grande-Rue, 35, ? Poligny? which is north of Geneva and west of Bern near the Swiss border.
