Dado que al principio de la contienda el régimen nazi había utilizado la excusa de las minorías para su polít…ica expansionista, los gobiernos de posguerra juzgaron que trasladar a esas minorías era la única manera de evitar futuros conflictos. Pero aquellos que se dieron en llamar territorios recuperados , y que se repartieron Polonia y la entonces Unión Soviética, llevaban siglos habitados por población alemana. El traslado de estas personas fue brutal: a pie en los primeros meses; en trenes de mercancías y transporte de ganado después. Sufrieron inanición, agotamiento, frío extremo y un vandalismo que los despojaba de sus poquísimas pertenencias. Una periodista de la época afirmó que fue «la decisión más inhumana que tomaron nunca unos gobiernos dedicados, en teoría, a la defensa de los derechos humanos». El protagonista de esta novela, que tenía trece años cuando se produjo el gran desalojo, es uno de esos desplazados. La guerra lo ha dejado sin familia ?sólo sobrevive uno de sus hermanos? y sin país. Únicamente conserva cuatro fotografías. Al cabo de cincuenta años decide recorrer con su esposa los escenarios de su niñez.
