8vo. pp. xxiii, 548, xi, [1]. French & English text. 7 folding maps. biblio. original gilt-crested cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut (spine sunned). First Complete Edition, Limited to 550 copies. The English Translation is by William Dawson LeSueur. An account of the La Vérendrye's fur trading and pioneering exploration westward from Lake Superior to the lower Saskatchewan and Missouri Rivers during the years 1730-51, including a visit to the Mandans in North Dakota (1738-39). While La Vérendrye failed in his quest to discover the sea of the west, he and his sons and nephew established important fur trading posts: Fort Saint-Pierre on Rainy Lake, Fort Saint-Charles on Lake of the Woods, Fort Maurepas on the south shore of Lake Winnipeg and the Red River, Fort La Reine on the Assiniboine River, Fort Rouge at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, Fort Dauphin on Lake Winnipeg, and Fort Bourbon on Cedar Lake. "the posts he built west of the Great Lakes transformed Rainy Lake, Lake of the Woods, and Lake Winnipeg into French inland seas and diverted much of the fur of the Saskatchewan and Assiniboine areas from Hudson Bay to the St. Lawrence."
