(60 figure raffiguranti misurazioni, strumenti tecnici, schemi, esempi di mappe). Legatura coeva in mezza pelle con titoli e filetit in oro al dorso. Antica nota di possesso ms. al frontespizio, minime tracce d'uso alla legatura, fioriture sparse e qualche alone, perlopiù marginale. Buon esemplare. Opera tra le più esaustive in materia di arte topografica, divenuta, anche grazie alle campagne napoleoniche del tempo, sempre più necessaria soprattutto in ambito militare. I tradizionali settori interessati sono invece l'architettura civile, quella rurale e la navigazione. Verkaven, professore di matematica alla scuola di cavalleria di Saint Germain, spiega dettagliatamente le tecniche di progettazione e realizzazione delle mappe, includendo la descrizione minuziosa dei principali strumenti tecnici a disposizione dei topografi, molti dei quali perfezionati verso la fine del XVIII secolo da Borda, Delambre e ovviamente Cassini. Questa nuova strumentazione aveva portato ad un netto miglioramento nella qualità del rilievo e nella rappresentazione cartografica durante le campagne di guerra del periodo napoleonico, che fecero fare un salto di qualità alle applicazioni sul campo. Alla fine dell'opera catalogo della miglior produzione cartografica disponibile per uso militare relativa ad ogni nazione. J.-J.
