Weil dort die Verschmelzung der Rassen, ihrer menschl…ichen und künstlerischen Eigenschaften vollständig vollzogen wurde. Aleijadinho, das "kleine Krüppelchen", mit wirklichem Namen Antonio Lisboa (1738 - 1814), wurde als Mulatte in Minas Gerais, also im Land der "allgemeinen Minen" geboren und bei seiner Geburt frei erklärt. Sein Vater, ein bekannter portugiesischer Baumeister, zeugte auch andere Kinder mit seiner rechtmäßigen Gattin, einer weißen Portugiesin. Doch das Genie war der Mulatte, später schwer leprakrank. Aleijadinhos Kunst gehört zu den seelischen Wurzeln Brasiliens. Sein brasilianisches Ba-rock schmückt noch heute die schönsten Kirchen von Minas Gerais, besonders in Ouro Preto, "Schwarzes Gold" genannt, weil dort das erste Gold im schwarzen Fluß-Schlamm gefunden wurde. Ouro Preto wurde deswegen vom brasilianischen Kulturministerium unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. In Congonhas do Campo schuf Aleijadinho sein Hauptwerk: die Propheten aus Seifenstein (Saponit) nachweislich ohne Hände. Er war schwer leprakrank und ließ sich das Handwerkszeug an die Stummeln seiner Arme anbinden. Die Autorin hat für ihren geschichtlichen Roman die Form eines doppelten Tagebuches gewählt. Im ersten Teil schreibt der Künstler selbst, unterbrochen von den Erklärungen und Gedanken seines priesterlichen Bruders, Felix Lisboa. Für den zweiten Teil zeichnet sein Bruder Felix, der Priester, weil Aleijadhino dann nicht mehr hätte schreiben können.
