A VILLAGE ON THE OUDE RIJN RIVER Drawing in pen and grey wash by Theodorus, known as 'Dirk' Verrijk (17341786). Size: 25 × 37.7 cm. Fine eighteenth-century village view beside a broad waterway, probably the Old Rhine. Houses, a windmill and a church tower line the bank; sailing boats and rowing boats lie on the water, while fish…ermen and boatmen animate the scene. The location has not been identified with certainty, but the composition fits well within Verrijk's favoured repertoire of villages, country houses, windmills and river views in Holland and Utrecht. Dirk Verrijk (17341786) was one of the important Dutch topographical draughtsmen of the second half of the eighteenth century. He often made an accurate sketch on the spot, which he later worked up into a finished drawing. Although this village view need not represent an exactly identifiable location, Verrijk evokes an idealised image of the prosperous Dutch waterside landscape. The subtle tonal variations give the sheet depth: the foreground is strong and detailed, while the buildings and boats in the distance gradually dissolve into the light. The result is an intimate yet lively image of a village in which water, trade, labour and landscape are inseparably connected. Price: Euro 1.650,-.

Skilful drawing of the village of Overschie seen from the water. At the centre the village church surrounded by several houses, several figures alongside the canal and a small sailing boat on the canal. The viewing point and composition used by Verrijk strongly resemble, but are not identical to, those of the etching that Abraha…m Rademaker made in 1725.Overschie used to be a municipality in the province of Zuid-Holland, but in 1941 it was annexed by Rotterdam.Signed "d. Verrijk. del. ad. viv: 1761" in pen and grey ink on lower left, titled "Overt-Schie" in grey ink in lower middle and numbered "No. 2" in brown ink on lower right. Pen and brush and grey ink with grey wash, over traces of pencil, on laid paper, 176 x 271 mm. Within ruled ink border. Watermark: French lily in crowned shield. Left edge partly pasted on old mount (numbered 69 and 1090 on recto, old price on verso: "f 3 - 5 1/2"), a few tiny, hardly noticeable foxing stains in sky area, overall in excellent condition.
