A late 17th century, second edition of Viardel's Observations on the practice of natural, unnatural, and monstrous childbirth: with a very easy method for assisting women in all kinds of childbirth, without using hooks or any instrument other than the hand. With a treatise on the principal diseases th…at commonly affect women and girls, and on diseases of the breasts. There are 15 full page engravings depicting various babies in the womb, extraction techniques, and more, as well as three anatomical folding plates. One finely bound volume in octavo, (44)+371+(1) pages, 15 unnumbered leaves of plates, and three folding plates This volume is in good shape, with rubbing and wear to the binding, and leather peeling to the spine. The title page is cleanly detached. There is minor foxing throughout.

Viardel's text was essentially a practical manual based on his experience and was grounded in observed cases, rather than theoretical. Childbirth at the time was governed by traditional midwifery, but… was increasingly recorded and systematized by medical professionals, Viardel's book being an example. The curious engraved plates illustrate fetal positions, complications, and instrumental intervention. Scarce. 8vo, [5], 2-344, [12]pp. Engraved folding frontis and16 engraved plates (2 folding). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt-stamped spine label, page edges stained red. Single tape repair to frontis, and larger tape repair to second folding plate. Spine ends chipped, joints and corners rubbed, but sound. A complete, very good copy.

Dass aber auch seine praktischen Lehren, wie v. Siebold II p. 156 angibt, Wiederholungen aus den Schriften der Alten seien, ist nicht zutreffend. Ebensowenig hat er sich, wie es bei dem genannten Geschichtsforscher, ibid p. 157, heisst, 'im ganzen hauptsächlich an die geburtshülflichen Lehren des Guillemeau gehalten'. In der Praxis sucht er sich vielfach seinen eigenen Weg und sein Streben geht in einer Zeit, die eine unschädliche Kopfzange noch nicht kannte, vor allem dahin, die Instrumente zu verbannen, da die Hand das beste aller Instrumente sei. Zu welch mühevollen Prozeduren er mit dieser Anschauung gelegentlich seine Zuflucht nehmen musste, werden einige Beispiele zeigen. Avec de remarquables illustrations dont un étrange portrait dépliant où l'auteur montre du doigt un enfant mort-né, et 16 autres planches des différentes manoeuvres de l'accouchement.
