Later edition. Early work on childbirth first published by Viardel Cosme, queen Marie-Therese's surgeon, first published in 1671. Viardel's text was essentially a practical manual based on his experience and was grounded in observed cases, rather than theoretical. Childbirth at the time was governed by traditional midwifery, but was increasingly recorded and systematized by medical professionals, Viardel's book being an example. The curious engraved plates illustrate fetal positions, complications, and instrumental intervention. Scarce. 8vo, [5], 2-344, [12]pp. Engraved folding frontis and16 engraved plates (2 folding). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt-stamped spine label, page edges stained red. Single tape repair to frontis, and larger tape repair to second folding plate. Spine ends chipped, joints and corners rubbed, but sound. A complete, very good copy.

Dass aber auch seine praktischen Lehren, wie v. Siebold II p. 156 angibt, Wiederholungen aus den Schriften der Alten seien, ist nicht zutreffend. Ebensowenig hat er sich, wie es bei dem genannten Geschichtsforscher, ibid p. 157, heisst, 'im ganzen hauptsächlich an die geburtshülflichen Lehren des Guillemeau gehalten'. In der Praxis sucht er sich vielfach seinen eigenen Weg und sein Streben geht in einer Zeit, die eine unschädliche Kopfzange noch nicht kannte, vor allem dahin, die Instrumente zu verbannen, da die Hand das beste aller Instrumente sei. Zu welch mühevollen Prozeduren er mit dieser Anschauung gelegentlich seine Zuflucht nehmen musste, werden einige Beispiele zeigen.
