Jean Katherine Baird (1872 or 1873-1918) was the Dean of Women at Beaver College (now Arcadia College) in Beaver, Pennsylvania and the prolific author of short stories and books including the Hester series. Disappointed in love, she died as result of "poison self-administered while in a state of mental depression," according to the coroner's report. Baird was also the author of CASH THREE. Thomas Victor Hall (1879-1965) was an American illustrator, painter, and sculptor. "The Shannons lived on Goat Hill, not down at the foot where the houses were only a few rough boards clinging together, and there was a question whether goats or children were in excess, but quite at the top where there was a fine view of the mills and the river and the long rocky slope where the pennyroyal, in a desperate struggle to live, squeezes between the stones. .Back of the kitchen was a lean-to. This lean-to, with the assistance of a straw-tick on the floor, served as a bed-room for Danny." [from the first pages].
