First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A near fine copy, in a very good unclipped dust jacket, of the first South African edition. The coarse green cloth binding is clean and shows only light wear, with strong plum lettering to the spine and front board. Everything is sound and tight, with square unbumped corners. The contents are clean and bright with only a small bookseller's notation to the front pastedown - no other markings of any kind. The lovely illustrated dust jacket is unclipped (12/6), and has light edgewear, with small losses to the spine top and a little rubbing to the corners. It is now protected in a removable mylar cover. From the blurb: "Here we learn of the trade in human flesh, of hair-raising mutinies on board the slave-ships and of stirring encounters with pirates. The author omits no aspect of the daily life of the slaves, of their adventures in desertion, their customs in mating, their naive and strange superstitions, how they gambled at dice or cock-fighting, and danced and feasted on bright moonlit nights".

Seller: Nineveh & Tyre, Cedar Rapids, IA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. A near fine copy in a good dust jacket. The orange cloth binding is clean and tight with bold brown lettering to the spine and front board and tight unbumped corners. This copy has been *INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR* on the title page. Other than that the contents are clean and bright with no ownership inscriptions or other markings of any kind. The unclipped dust jacket (no flap price) is otherwise complete and presents very well on the front face. However, the spine of the jacket has been affected by water damage which has rendered it largely illegible. It is now protected in a removable mylar cover. From the blurb: "[This book] gives a fascinating insight into the life of the slave at the Cape in the 17th and 18th Centuries. The author's attention to detail and his ability to rouse and keep our interest, make this an attractive and valuable publication".
