Vor allem die Tier- und Zaubermärchen…sind aus internationaler Verbreitung bekannt, und ihre vorliegende Fassung zeigt häufig enge Beziehungen zur russischen, schwedischen und deutschen Märchentradition; doch prägten andererseits die gleichen historischen Faktoren einen ganz spezifischen Stil, ein spezifisches Milieu sowie nur für die estnische Überlieferung charakteristische Versionen bestimmter Märchentypen. So spielen zum Beispiel die Riesen und Helden des estnischen Nationalepos ?Kalevipoeg? auch in den Novellen- und Teufelsmärchen eine große Rolle; die Gestalt des klugen und starken Helden, der für die Befreiung aus jahrhundertelanger Leibeigenschaft und Unterdrückung, gegen fremde und eigene Feudalherren kämpft, tritt hier wie in der litauischen und lettischen Volksprosa besonders deutlich zutage.
