La Poetria nova constituye la primera exposición completa sobre el arte poética y abarca el estudio de las cinco operaciones retóricas, siguiendo fielmente el esquema de la retórica tradicional, en la cual se inspira como una de sus fuentes primordiales. La retórica le proporciona al autor un sistema global de explicación del texto literario-poético y un instrumental teórico válido para describir la naturaleza de la obra de arte verbal en el seno del hecho literario-poético, dentro de un marco semiótico. La Poetria nova, fruto de la combinación de la tradición gramatical de la enarratio poetarum con los preceptos sobre la composición derivados de la retórica, es una obra sobre el arte poética que presenta un interés manifiesto por los fundamentos de la misma de acuerdo con los principios estéticos del momento. Nuestro análisis ha pretendido entrelazar el conjunto de categorías retóricas y gramaticales, aplicadas a cuestiones poéticas, con categorías lingüístico-textuales, con el fin de acercarnos a la cuestión de la especificidad literaria y poética del texto artístico medieval. Esto ha sido posible gracias al hecho de que la poética medieval no se haya limitado al estudio de las estructuras en el ámbito de las oraciones, sino que haya abordado el estudio de la estructura textual global.
