[Brussels], Bibliothèque Royale de Belgique & [Turnhout], Brepols, [1997]. 390 pp. Num. ills (some col.). Orig. hardcover (clothbound), d./j. Large 8vo.Text in French. - Willem Vrelant (died c. 1481/1482) was a Dutch book illuminator. He is first registered in 1449, when an illuminator from Vreeland named Willem Backer obtained citizenship of Utrecht. He may have lived in Utrecht for years, as in 1450 he finished there the Hours of William de Montfort. From 1454 to 1481 he is recorded as a member of the Bruges guild of bookmakers. His large and productive workshop produced (among others) a book of hours which is now in Baltimore (1455-60), the Hours of Isabella of Castille (c.1460), the Chronicles of Hainaut (1468) and individual miniatures in the Hours of Mary of Burgundy (c.1480). Following Vrelant's death, his widow inherited his workshop. Madame Vrelant ran the studio alongside Elisabeth Scepens, one of his former pupils. [Source: Wikipedia].

No Binding. Condition: Fine. Illuminated miniature from a Book of Hours, Bruges, c. 1460. Painted in the style of Willem Vrelant, on vellum. 58 x 37mm, pasted to a vellum leaf. Vrelant, from Utrecht, had settled in Bruges by 1454 where he rapidly attracted prestigious patrons, headed by the Dukes of Burgundy, Philip the Good and his successor, Charles the Bold, and also worked with assistants to meet the demands of a wider market. The artist of this miniature is close to Vrelant in style and technique, deploying rich comparatively unmodulated colours, clarified and defines by line, to create attractively detailed scenes even on this small scale.

O fac-símile reproduz a qualidade superior do velino utilizado, a regularidade da escrita, as iniciais finamente desenhadas e preenchidas a ouro laminado e brunido. Ca. 1450-1475. [2007]. With 18.4x13.5 cm. With [1], [164] folios. Illustrated with decorated capitals in a golden background; frames with styled floral motifs and grotesque human figures; six full page illuminations with scenes of the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary; and the Office of the Dead. Binding: full calf, with raised bands and blind tools on spine and boards, replicating the original Mudejar style. Copy from a special 500 copy edition, authenticated by a notarial act. Book of the liturgy and rituals of the Catholic Church, in Latin, handwritten in Gothic calligraphy, produced and illuminated using the ?grisaille? technique (grey, black and gold) at the workshop of Willem Vrelant (?-1481) - the famous Flemish school of Bruges. A superb reproduction of the personal book of hours of D. Leonor Queen of Portugal, (1458-1525), which was also owned by the Order of Saint Clare and the Convent of the Mother of God (Lisbon). Presently, the original is at the Lisbon National Library. As attested in this facsimile, the calendar folios corresponding to the months of February and November (between the second and the third folio) are missing from the original. This book of Hours is a masterpiece and one of the best examples of what was produced in Flanders during this period. Totally illuminated with golden Grisaille and golden leaf capital letters. The facsimile reproduces the high quality of the original velum, the evenness of the writing, the capital letters delicately designed and filled with golden leaf and burnished gold. An original and important feature is the abundance and narrative character of the marginal figures: warriors, peasants, nobles, biblical and court scenes. Throughout the books the figures develop a narrative that researchers think is the history of the King of France, Charles VII, and of Joan of Arc in the last episode of the Hundred Years War. Wilhelm Vrelam?s workshop was active between 1454 and 1482 and this facsimile was edited in 2007, in a partnership between Taberna Libraria, BNP (Portuguese National Library) and A4 Editions.
