A large format and highly detailed map of the north eastern provinces of China and the border of Korea by Russia's first consul general to Korea. Karl Ivanovich Weber ( ???? ????????? ??????, also known as Carl von Waeber) was a diplomat of the Russian Empire and a personal friend to King Gojong of Korea's Joseon Dynasty. He served as as Russia's first consul general to Korea between 1885 ? 1897 after signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Russia and Korea on 25 June 1884. Waeber published the first edition of his Map of North Eastern China in 1893, with this second edition published in 1900, the intervening years seeing a significant rise of the influence of Russia in Korea. Printed and published in St Petersburg by the military cartographer Alexey Afinogenovich Ilyin, and distributed by the Hamburg booksellers and publishers Friederichsen & Co. Published in Russia, bound ing China, distributed in Germany and written in English, the place of publication has caused confusion for cataloguers with entries on OCLC suggesting Hamburg, Shanghai, London and St. Petersburg as the imprint. Very rare, we cannot locate another copy being previously offered for sale.
