Decorative Cloth. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). A fair copy in the original grey decorative cloth binding with designs and 34 tipped-in colour plates by Arthur Rackham. The binding has been rebacked - relaying the original spine and endpapers, so it is nice and tight. There is some bumping to the front top corner and the back board corners. The binding is very clean with some fading and browning to the spine. The original decorative endpapers are free of inscriptions - there is a little grubbiness - the back free endpaper has had a sheet of music pasted to the reverse - the music contains the motifs to Siegfried, the ring and other relevant sections. There is an ink inscription to a preliminary 'To Elizabeth for her "seventeenth" birthday - from Daddy and Mummie with our best love 19 Aug'. There is some spotting to preliminaries and the text pages have a brown tint especially to edges. This book is classed as 'fair' and priced cheaply because there is some damage to the plates. They are all present but 7 have slight creases - to the left bottom corner and 5 have very noticeable creases again mainly to the left corner. Three of the backing pages for the plates have small repaired paper tears to the edges. The plate opposite page 104 has a small spot of loss where the plate surface has come off onto the tissue guard. The backing plate for the final plate has very nibbled edges. There is the odd mark to pages but the contents are generally clean.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. Stated at copyright: First Edition published 1939. Bluish-green full-cloth boards, sharp black cover and spine design, titles, moderate shelf, spine edge wear, rub. Crisp cover design features titles w/stylized dragon eating its tail and spine features titles w/classic ouroboros insignia. Pages very good w/moderate toning. Decorated endpapers w/floating fairies. Bind good, square; hinges intact. Illustrated throughout with the epic imagery of the saga by Arthur Rackham on smooth, coated plates. Printed in Great Britain by William Clowes and Sons, Limited, Duchy Street, Stamford Street, London, and at Beccles. 160 and 182 pages of text w/24 plates in each book of this single volume. Insured post. These works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas, and are translated here into English by Margaret Armour. The saga includes: 'The Rhinegold' - the prelude, 'The Valkyrie' - the first day of the trilogy, 'Siegfried' - the second day of the trilogy, and 'The Twilight of the Gods' - the third day of the trilogy. Initially establishing his reputation as a romantic composer, Wagner revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk ('total work of art'), by which he sought to synthesise the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts. This edition of 'The Rhinegold and The Valkyrie' and 'Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods' is heightened by the dazzling color illustrations of a master of the craft, Arthur Rackham. One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham's artistry is unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Wagner's captivating storytelling. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Hard Cover. Condition: Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Good-. Arthur Rackham. (illustrator). New Impression. 160 pp, 10" H. Taupe-coloured cloth with black lettering/decoration on spine and front board, black publisher's emblem on rear board. Pictorial endpapers, b&w vignettes, 34 colour plates (including frontispiece), tipped in on heavy stock with borders, tissue covers bearing captions (all present). This book contains the first two parts of 'The Ring of the Niblung', i.e.: 'The Rhinegold: Prelude' and 'The Valkyrie: First Day of the Trilogy'. This English translation of Richard Wagner's epic opera is enhanced by Arthur Rackham's beautiful, detailed illustrations, which bring to life the gods, goddesses, giants, dwarves and other inhabitants of the drama. The plates are all clean and bright, although one has four tiny flecks of skim from the facing tissue at the top (probably as a result of the tipping-in process), one has a very small crease at the bottom left-hand corner and another has a very tiny piece of edge wear. The card stock has darkened, as seems common with this production, affecting the adjacent pages (see photograph). Some pages have light wrinkling (no creases) - mainly at corners. Moderate browning to edges of text block. Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Two margin tears (not affecting text or illustrations) have been repaired with archival tape. Dust jacket has very small chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, browning and some very light scuffs on spine, some light browning on panels, three water stains on spine - the largest and darkest at the bottom, light edge wear/wrinkling, small light stain on rear panel.
