During August and September of 1859 four separate reconnaissances left that isolated military post of the rim of the frontier--Fort Defiance. The detachments, commanded by two young and energetic officers, Captains O. L. Shepherd and J. G. Walker, were entrusted with the task of thoroughly exploring a specific section of the Navajo country. These four reconnaissances demonstrate undeniable proof that the Navajos did not want war, and were in fact doing their utmost to live in peaceful co-existence with the settlers.
