Blanchard, born in 1872 of a French-Canadian father and a Belgian mother, grew up on the Chippewa River and went to work in the pineries in northwestern Wisconsin at the age of fourteen. He knew every inch of the river, had shot all the rapids down to Eau Claire, and had taken part in the biggest drives ever seen on the Chippewa. His stories constitute an informal social history of the lumberjack frontier.
