Add to basketCloth. Condition: Near Fine. FIRST EDITION, with TLS & POSTCARD LAID IN. 8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Top edge spotted. A little musty, else, clean and tight. One-page TLS on white A4 paper (29. April 1981) addressed "Dearest John", with Lucas's Swan Cottage, Rackham letterhead printed in black, and signed "Love as ever, Bar" and two-sided hand-written postcard (12 Jan. 85) in blue biro and again to "Dearest John," laid in. In the Alan Breese-designed illustrated dust jacket, printed in olive, black and pink: spine sunned, a little rubbed and creased at edges. Near fine/ very good A lovely, bright copy of the English Catholic intellectual and writer Barbara Lucas' sixth novel, "a very 1969 romance; [with] a very 1969 hero and heroine," with affectionate later correspondence addressed to "Dearest John" laid in. Barbara Wall (19112009), who wrote under her maiden name Lucas, was, like her husband Bernard and her grandparents before her, a Catholic intellectual: she was the granddaughter of Wilfrid and Alice Meynell (as well as the niece of Punch editor E. V. Lucas). With her husband she founded the Catholic Worker newspaper in Britain and was "active in organizations linked to Catholic peace traditions". Three years after this novel was published, in 1972, she was awarded the Benemerenti Medal for her work for peace. She was also a translator of French and wrote a biography of Rene Hague. According to the PO, Lucas' addressee was John Vernon, a former MI5 agent and international civil servant with NATO, who had served with 'D' Section (General Intelligence) of the Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB) in Italy during WWII. This seems credible and certainly fits with both the mention of his wife Susanna (the pioneer conference interpreter) in Lucas' correspondence, as well as mutual friends (alive and deceased), including Esmé and Mondi Howard and Muriel Grindrod. Gabriel [formerly Wall] and her husband Bernard Bergonzi are also mentioned, including news of her death shortly after Christmas day 1984. The Bernard and Barbara Wall Papers are held by the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, Georgetown University, Washington. The Private Papers of Major J A B Vernon OBE are held by the Imperial War Museum, London.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Toward Acceptance is a systematic study of the complex issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered persons on college campuses. Organized into five distinct sections, Toward Acceptance builds on the content included in Evans and Wall's previous book, Beyond Tolerance: Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals on Campus (American College Personnel Association, 1993). The editors begin with an overview of the current research dealing with gay, lesbian and bisexual student issues and then move into a discussion of the organizations promoting awareness and counseling. The latter portion of the book focuses on diversity among the gay and lesbian community and concludes with an examination of how student affairs professionals can continue to be proactive in the area of sexual orientation awareness and support. Complete with a comprehensive collection of resources, Toward Acceptance is an important tool in the greater awareness of problems within the gay and lesbian college community. Co-published with American College Personnel Association.
