The editors - Blanche Wallen (New York University), Henry L. Smith (Emory University), Lawrence McTurnan (University of Minnesota), and Louise Abney combine literary excellence with pedagogical intent, pairing works by authors such as Stevenson, Dickinson, and Poe with guidance for reading, speech, and composition. Illustrated by renowned artist Milo Winter, whose frontispiece depicts a vibrant alpine ski scene, this anthology aimed to 'cultivate permanent, worthwhile reading interests' and 'guide and elevate literary taste.' This copy is in Fine condition, pages bright and clean with only light toning, bound in russet cloth stamped in silver and red. Prior owner name (Lillian Black) on front endpaper. "The road was surveyed through new country for the benefit of emigrants and prospective settlers. They departed from The Dalles on June 4, and arrived at Camp Floyd, Utah Territory, on August 16. They left Camp Floyd on August 20 and returned to The Dalles. In addition, detachments of the command explored much of central-eastern Oregon. Wallen speaks of travelers being harassed by Indians on the California road during the summer just past," (Wagner-Camp, p. 640-41). Red pebble cloth hardcover with gilt title on spine. Light shelf wear and fading to red cloth. Toning to contents. Mild warping to pages in the back. A very good copy. On the front blank end sheet the previous owner, Lieutenant O.H. Dockery Jr. 3rd U.S. Infantry, stamped his name twice and wrote "Dont Steal this good book of O H Dockery 3rd Inf - USA." Dockery also wrote the same inscription on page 168. His name is stamped on the rear blank end sheet with some hand written "Rules of conduct". Dockery's name is also written on the rear paste down. Lt. Oliver Hart Dockery graduated from North Carolina in 1895 and served in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
