A detailed guide to Gloucester cathedral which originated with the establishment of a minster, Gloucester Abbey, dedicated to Saint Peter in around 679. Embracing descriptions of the painted windows, ancient paintings, and inscriptions found within the architecture. Written by Henry Haines, a British reverend. Revised and corrected up to the present time, and illustrated by Frederick Sandham Waller, a British architect and antiquarian of Gloucester, where he was the resident architect to the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral. Dated from Canterbury Cathedral Library. Bound in half calf with cloth covered boards with the original paper wraps bound in to the rear. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities and minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. Royal Navy Lieutenant E. D. Young went to Africa in search of David Livingstone who had been reported to be lost while searching for the origins of the Nile. Henry Faulkner joined the expedition mainly to hunt. His shooting of elephant, buffalo and hippo in what is now Malawi and around Lake Nyasa are included in this volume. The author had been with Lvingstone on his second expedition to Lake Malawi in 1863 and volunteered to lead an expedition to determine whether the allegation of Livingstone's murder were true. A pleasing copy of this scarce volume relating to Livingstone. Size: 8vo.
