Wallis was a Baltimore lawyer, politician, author and diplomat who, during the Civil War, was imprisoned for 14 months by Federal forces. His statue stands in Baltimore's Mount Vernon Square.He was distantly related to Wallis Simpson. #.

In fair ex-library condition, with light scuffing to boards. Losses to head and heel of spine. Light starting to hinges. Text block remains bound well. Ex-library from the McCormick Theological Semianry, with bookplate, card holder, and assorted markings and stampings throughout. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce piece on the author's travels throughout Spain. Severn Teackle Wallis (1816-1894) was a Maryland lawyer and politician. A supporter of secession, he and several other Maryland politicians were arrested by federal forces around the start of the Civil War, with Wallis being held for several months.

At that time, he was asked by the U.S. government to return to Spain on official business, where he was able to observe its institutions and meet public officials. This work resulted from that visit. 12mo. Three quarter brown leather with blue and brown marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt title, blind-stamped devices, and raised bands to spine. Marbled endpapers and full marbled edges. Leather on corners of front and back covers is worn, and there are other minor scuff marks on spine. Dampstaining to margins of front and back free endpapers and first few and last few pages of book, with slight browning throughout. Otherwise, clean, with small stains on a few pages. A fine copy in price-clipped dust wrapper, lightly creased and dust soiled, with a sliver of moisture marking to the base of the spine panel.
