Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2018). (2017) 2018 1st trade edition. 8vo (158 x 235mm). Ppxxii,298. B/w photographs, b/w illustrations by the author, maps. Red boards, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. A brand new compilation of Karamojo Bell's short stories, all previously unpublished. "Once again the legendary Karamojo Bell marches through the wilds of Africa - traversing a land virtually untouched by modern civilization in search of adventure and ivory. Join us as Bell takes us to a land with vast herds of wildlife living in rough equilibrium with the native human populations. Through his earlier books Bell gained the reputation for being an excellent marksman who shot small-caliber guns at giant elephants with deadly precision. Bell was best known for his exploits in Karamoja, in what is now largely Uganda, and in these newly unearthed short stories, we again find him in familiar terrain and with his faithful retinue of trackers and camp followers. We also find Bell in unfamiliar terrain. Travel with Bell to the French Congo where he encounters a man-eating leopard, and go along with him to West Africa when he ventures into the rain forest with the Pygmies to test his luck against elephants in dense vegetation. Then there are some wonderfully descriptive stories of an elephant camp and its social life, crocodiles that menace a village, several hunts for elephants on islands in the Ubangi River (not for the faint of heart!), and a trip from Kano to Khartoum via motor car. These are just a few of our cache of new stories - original adventures never before published." .

Book First Edition
Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2018). 2018 1st trade edition. Large 8vo (160 x 234mm). Pp391. B/w photographs, maps, line illustrations, map end-papers. Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. "This book is not a rehash of Karamojo Safari, Wanderings of an Elephant Hunter, or Incidents from an Elephant Hunter's Diary. This is Bell's life story, and it includes about 60 percent more material than can be found in Bell of Africa. The chapters in this book are presented in chronological order, in Bell's own words. Now, for the first time, it will be possible for Bell aficionados to place the hunting stories from the first three books listed above into the framework of Bell's life. By looking at some of the chapters, it is easy to follow the evolution of Bell the hunter and Bell the man . While we did our best to eliminate redundancies whenever we could in editing his autobiographical notes, we decided that it was necessary to keep some of them in order to preserve continuity and to respect the importance of maintaining chronological order in the telling of Bell's life's story. For example the chapter entitled "Karamojo" (1902 to 1907) is one. Using Bell's own words, we did a synopsis of Bell's time there; we did not rehash what can be found elsewhere . and we found (an unpublished) gem of a story that occurred at the very end of Bell's penultimate journey into Karamoja, which we included at the end of the chapter." Numerous footnotes give a commentary on the text. The footnotes allow Bell's own accounts to hang together and be understood without interrupting or interfering with the accounts themselves. The book's contents are sorted into three parts, Part I is Bell's life story, Part II has original stories by Bell that have not been published elsewhere, and Part III contains some of Bell's letters. Chapters include: Part I: Early misadventures; I take a sailing ship to the other side of the world; New Zealand in the 1890s; Swagging and other adventures; My escape from Germany; One foot in Africa, 1897; another foor in the Yukon; Back to Africa and the Boer War; Into the unknown; Karamojo; Abyssinia under Menelik; The Lado Enclave; Rubber and whales, an interlude; Liberia, where the black man rules; French Equatorial Africa; I join the Royal Flying Corps; The war years; Another go at Africa; Home in the Highlands; Postscript; The obituary of Capt. W.D.M. Bell by Major Kinloch. Part II: Walter Bell's Handbook on African Big Game; The repulsive saurian; The Nandi epic; The Somali virgin; A sojourn among practicing Christians; Among friends; A whaling project; Hunting and the Waboni; Slaving and raiding in Karamojo; The film party; Miscellaneous misadventures and reminiscences. Part III: Letters; Legal documents, copies of archives and newspaper clippings. "Walter Bell's "life's story is testament to his bold, courageous, ruggedly individualistic, and persistent nature. Once you've read his exciting memoirs, we are confident that you will agree." An exceedingly good book, probably the best that could be written on this subject. .

Edges and end-papers quite foxed, slight staining to cloth else good-plus in chipped dust-wrapper. Hard to find in a dust-wrapper of any condition. "This is the tale of Walter Bell's epic journey into Karamojo [now divided between Uganda and Kenya] some 100 years ago when it was still completely unknown to Western man. Bell's safari lasted 14 months, and during that time he shot 180 tuskers and brought back 18,762 lbs of ivory. Of these, 31 tusks weighed over 100 lbs each, and the largest pair weighed in at 145 and 148 lbs. Nobody has ever accomplished a feat like this, especially amazing considering the logistics of the day." Bell's safari began on the Kenyan coast, and his account leads the reader through the whole process of preparation and the recruitment of porters, a blow-by-blow account of the safari itself, concluding with his triumphant and heavily laden return. "Not only is this a superb hunting story, but [this book] also offers true insight into the lives of Africans before colonization. Because Bell approached his crew and the tribes he met as equals, we get an unbiased account of what life in Africa really was like in precolonial days." A terrific read, packed with excitement and adventure, and a great deal of insight. .

Because Bell approached his crew and the tribes he met as equals, we get an unbiased account of what life in Africa really was like in precolonial days." A terrific read, packed with excitement and adventure, and a great deal of insight. .

It gives Bell's experiences in Uganda, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Central Africa, and West Africa. Foremost and elephant title, [this book] also includes tales of derring-do with buffalo and lion." Like many author-adventurers of the colonial era(s), Bell was an interested and sympathetic observer of the peoples amongst whom he lived, and he includes many observations of interest on contemporary society and politics. According to Bell, 'Karamojan elephants are distinguished for their bodily size, the quality and size of their ivory and for the quantity of fat on them'. In addition, 'he also narrates his hunting expeditions through the Sudd, into the Lado Enclave and the interior of Liberia in the decade preceding World War I. The work is further distinguished by the author's sketches of hunting elephant and their vital areas. He was, of course, a great proponent of small bore rifle shooting for elephant, killing them with carefully placed shots at close range' (Czech). Bell published this work several years after he had returned from Karamojo, and he admits that the days of unfettered elephant hunting may now be over. 'The hunting of the African elephant is now restricted in so many ways that it is difficult for anyone to gain experience in the shooting of them', he writes towards the beginning of his work. Fortunately, Bell's handy advice is there to remedy this inconvenience, particularly given that the exorbitant cost of hunting licenses 'therefore behoves the sportsman to make a good job of it when he does come face to face with these splendid elephants' (p. 5). Czech, p. 15; Hosken, p. 14.
