Unbound. Condition: Fine. Two page typed letter (both sides of a single quarto leaf) Signed "Walter" to "Cyndy" (reportedly another writer according to an old bookseller's description that accompanies the letter). Old folds from mailing else fine. Farley's letterhead features an illustration of the head of a black stallion, his typed return address is in Earlville, Pennsylvania. About 600 words, a very interesting letter that voices the author's feeling of isolation: "The writing is exciting but its a long and lonely job as you well know. Maybe not so much for you since you're in N.Y. and can leave your apt. for a very busy stimulating world outside which, I think, helps most writers. At least I felt that way, N.Y. being my home. But after making it and raising a family we moved outside tot he country and Florida - and of course, there are many advantages to it but as pleasant and beautiful as it is I sometimes think I've been sitting out the world. Yet in the long run perhaps more productive and a life with animals and nature." In the course of talking about horses, Farley mentions his famous book: "Most of my time is spent with horsemen at tracks and shows, doing like you exciting story research. I've just returned from a long trip to Arabian shows. I've always loved the breed, the horse of the desert, from which the Black Stallion began when I was a high school kid.".

He was a generous benefactor of the early city, co-founding the University of Rochester and the Rochester Orphan Asylum and becoming a leader in the Female Charitable Society. He was a member of the Pioneer Society of Rochester and Western N. Y., founded on September 30th 1847 at the Blossom Hotel in Rochester.
