Published in 1828, Mexico in 1827, is a comprehensive account of Mexico in the years following its independence from Spain. Sir Henry George Ward was the first British Chargé d'Affaires in Mexico. Written during his time in Mexico the book provide a unique first-hand analysis of Mexico's early governments' and the mining prospect of the newly created republic. The beautiful plates were created after original artwork by Ward's wife Emily. Thirteen total plates after original artwork by Lady Emily Elizabeth Swinburne Ward, five of which are folded (ten aquatints, one with hand-coloring, three lithographs). Five wood engraved text illustrations and two engraved folded maps. Ward's diplomatic career began in 1816, and he visited Mexico for the first time in 1823. The following year in 1824, he would marry Emily Elizabeth Swinburne who would accompany him on his second trip to Mexico in 1825 in his role of Charge d'Affaires. This work was an early appraisal of the fledgling Mexican Republic which provides numerous details on aspects such as trade, mining, economic activity, descriptions of cities, towns, and villages, and topography. The first map is titled "Mexico" and is depictive of the Republic as it stood at the time. The second map is "Map of Routes to the Principal Mining Districts in the Central States of Mexico." The plates are attractive and of good artistic quality with images depicting town scenes, an agave cactus, church scenes, Chapultepec, the interior of an Indian hut, etc. Both volumes are moderately rubbed with upper hinges professionally reinforced, and with the attractive bookplate of Edward Dean Adams on the front pastedown sheet, else in very good condition.

In a two-page preface, Ward states that it has 'been my fate to plead one of the greatest causes that can possibly be brought before Parliament, at a moment when circumstances have combined to give to it peculiar importance.' He hopes that 'this Publication may tend to produce, in the minds of all thinking Englishmen, the conviction, which is so deeply implanted in my own, that, upon the adoption by his Majesty's Government of the Principle of a great prospective, reduction in the Protestant Establishment in Ireland, must depend the tranquillity - I may almost say the stability - of the Empire!' The Appendix includes statistics concerning "Army Estimates | Military Force in Ireland".Scarce: the only copy on OCLC WorldCat at the British Library, and the only other copy traced at the National Library of Ireland. Ward entered parliament as an advanced Liberal in January 1833, and his entry in the ODNB states that 'he first came to notice by his motion, the first of many, on appropriating the surplus revenues of the Irish church (Speech of H. G. Ward, esq., M.P. on moving certain resolutions respecting the Irish Church in the House of Commons May 27, 1834, published in 1834), which resulted, whether intentionally, as was widely assumed, or not, in completing the breach in the reform ministry.'.
