Greatly impressed by the directness and simplicity of the narrative, and by the many intimate glimpses it afforded of Napoleon at various periods of his extraordinary career, and in circumstances too frequently slurred or ignored by the more formal historians, it was with some surprise that I found the work had not hitherto been translated. Despite the vast extent of Napoleonic literature that has grown up since the death of the exiled Emperor ninetyfive years ago, a literature that has been greatly added to within the past quarter of a century, but little apology is necessary for adding to it in an English dress a book so vivid and varied as that in which M. St. Hilaire presented his hero. For a few years it may be said that Napoleon did " bestride the narrow world like a Colossus, " and though close upon a century has elapsed since his death, the fascination of his personality as one of the great figures of history may be said to have increased rather than diminished with the lapse of time. Other aspects of Napoleon's life and character, brought out in these too-long neglected memoirs, that are worthy of special note are his constant thought for the beautifying of Paris and his frequent preoccupation with the welfare of the people. We are shown him journeying incognito with a single trusted companion about the highways and byways of the capital-sometimes with ludicrous results, as when neither he nor his companion had the money to pay for the breakfast they had eaten ; or when he had occasion to complain that the shops did not open early enough. The stories here given suggest that he never shut his ears to any tale of sorrow and distress, and readily disbursed large sums in charity, though the expenses of his Household were kept under severe control. With his living interest in the people about him, he was also ever conscious of a desire so to beautify Paris and other cities as to hand down to posterity monuments worthy of the glory of his country" - Preface ; slight wear to top of spine ; some foxing, else VG.
