Onderdonk served as Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York from 1830-1861 and is best known today as one of the most controversial figures in the history of the Diocese. He was accused of improper advances toward women and drunkeness, but at least some of the opposition to him came about because of his espousal of the Oxford Movement.
