As a young man Walker opened the way for trade in Spanish-ruled New Mexico, and was subsequently engaged to head the survey party which initially marked the Santa Fe Trail. Additionally, he guided the first wagon caravan to California, and later associated with Fremont and Kit Carson.

A fine, tight copy of this limited reissue of an important work in the History of the American West. One of the earliest biographies of this most famous of mountain men and explorers of the West (acclaimed as discoverer of Yosemite Valley). Walker was the leader, in 1836, of the first trapping expedition into California over the Sierras.
