Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Greg Bertolini (Author photograph) (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. ix, [1], 259, [3] pages. Signed by the author with sentiment on the fep. Signed Love, Wayne Dyer. The author argues that intention is a force found in the universe that propels an individual into action and includes stories and examples of the principles of intention and ways to apply intention to everyday life. Wayne Walter Dyer (May 10, 1940 - August 29, 2015) was an American self-help author and a motivational speaker. Dyer completed a Ed.D. in guidance and counseling at Wayne State University in 1970. Early in his career, he worked as a high school guidance counselor, and went on to run a successful private therapy practice. He became a popular professor of counselor education at St. John's University, where he was approached by a literary agent to put his ideas into book form. The result was his first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976), one of the best-selling books of all time. This launched Dyer's career as a motivational speaker and self-help author, during which he published 20 more best-selling books and produced a number of popular specials for PBS. Influenced by thinkers such as Abraham Maslow and Albert Ellis, Dyer's early work focused on psychological themes such as motivation, self-actualization and assertiveness. By the 1990s, the focus of his work had shifted to spirituality. Inspired by Swami Muktananda and New Thought, he promoted themes such as the "power of intention," collaborated with alternative medicine advocate Deepak Chopra on a number of projects, and was a frequent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Derived from a Publishers Weekly article: For this very popular speaker and author of the classic Your Erroneous Zones , intention is not dogged determination, but an inner awareness "that exists in the universe as an invisible force of energy." This conviction, gleaned from Dyer's professional experiences, studies and contacts with personal mentors, has allowed him to link to the force of intention and use it to enhance his life and work. For Dyer, there are seven faces, or energy fields, of intention: creativity, kindness, love, beauty, expansion, abundance and receptivity. Drawing on a variety of traditions and gurus, Dyer first describes how to surmount the barriers that may get in the way of connecting to this power, such as negative thinking, relying on the opinion of others or retaining a controlling ego. Dyer's message is deeply sympathetic. In a chapter on living a stress-free life, for example, he recommends silently repeating the words "I want to feel good"â"i.e., practicing a form of meditationâ"and elsewhere advises practicing detachment, a cornerstone of Buddhism. Another tactic, using forgiveness as a means to achieve peaceful relations with difficult family members, has recently found a wealth of expression. Dyer's soothing voice and gentle prescriptions for happiness remain uniquely his own, as admirers will recognize.
