Scuffing to spine ends and along joints; spine's gilt lettering remains bright; surface paper losses to both boards with leather corners worn. Text block edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Four-line ink inscription "Jas. M. Weaver. | Rara Avis. | Miss. | Present by J.M. Allen. M.C." upon front flyleaf. Foxing/toning most prevalent to initial and rear leaves but with internal occurrences too. Binding is firm. A school teacher for 32 years and lifetime farmer, James M. Weaver (1853-1936) was elected to two terms as Superintendent of Education in Itawamba County before moving on to higher state offices, first representing Itawamba County in the Mississippi House of Representatives and thereafter elected to the state senate representing both Itawamba and Lee County. Per the inscription, Weaver's residence was in what is now the ghost town of Rara Avis located in eastern Itawamba County atop the Alabama state line. Weaver's tenure in state politics overlapped the career of U.S. Representative John Mills Allen (1846-1917) aka "Private John" Allen, a Tupelo attorney and former Confederate soldier who was elected to eight consecutive terms from 1885-1901. The book's inscription does not match the single Allen signature exemplar found online so there is some possibility that it is secretarial writing although this is countered by the two Tupelo-area politicians certainly knowing one another and the odd impropriety of Allen passing off an inscription to a political cohort upon an underling.
