Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Illustrated by Walt Howarth (illustrator). "Authorised edition published in Great Britain by WORLD DISTRIBUTORS (Manchester) LIMITED, Grosvenor House, St. Luke's Street, Manchester 1, by arrangement with Western Printing and Lithographic Company, Racine, Wisconsin, U.S.A." Small quarto hardcover in glossy boards. No dust jacket, probably as issued. Signed by the illustrator Walt Howarth diagonally in brown ink to the copyright page. Price of "7/6" has been glued in place to bottom corner of illustrated front pastedown, presumably by the British publisher. Eight adventures starring the late '50s-early '60s TV character played on television by Clint Walker, six featuring scattered color illustrations, but two presented in full-color "comic book" format. The second of these, "Cheyenne West of the River," sees our hero leading a "guardhouse gang" of misfit soldiers to rescue two captive white girls -- actually now aged 18 and 23 -- who have been held captive by the Kiowa for five years. Cheyenne warns the colonel that women held that long are probably now staying with the Indians voluntarily. Sure enough, the older sister fears she'll never be accepted in white society again (no reason stated, though adults may infer she's "no longer pure,") while the younger has "gone native" and works to betray her "rescuers" to the pursuing Indian chief she loves. In other words, this is a straight rewrite of James R. Webb's screenplay for the 1953 Guy Madison 3-D Western "Charge at Feather River," which featured Vera Miles and Helen Westcott as the two captives. As Webb later scripted some episodes of "Cheyenne" -- before moving on to script feature films "Cape Fear" and "Cheyenne Autumn" -- one doubts the otherwise larcenous re-appearance of the story line here can be a coincidence. 93 pp. hardcover "comic book/graphic novel." Reduced from $52. Signed by Illustrator(s).
