Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. 329 pp, Fine condition book does not look like it has been read. It is protected in an acetate cover and slipcase which is in near fine condition. It is a signed/numbered edition by this author, of 350 books. The only flaws I find are a minimal amount of soiling on the edge of the text block (a few pinheads in size) which I believe is ink from the top edge from production and a bit of a rough cut to the bottom edge of text block, again from the factory. Publisher's linen; black topstain; 8vo; 8.5 inches; [8],442 pages. The bindings are tight and square. Text is clean; light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with hand-soiling. Previous owner's name on the endpage. Jerome Weidman's Letter of Credit explores themes of ambition, morality, and the complex dynamics of socio-economic aspiration. Known for his insightful depictions of Jewish-American life, Weidman uses vivid characters and situations to navigate questions of identity and societal pressures. Weidman's writing frequently examines the interplay of personal integrity and success, a theme that resonates through Letter of Credit. The book aligns with his broader literary focus on the gritty realities of urban life and the pursuit of the American Dream. [Adapted from Reviews].

Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter brown cloth with gilt spine lettering and tan paper over boards, dust jacket. 422pp. Near fine/fine. Superb and tight first edition of this (to cite jacket front) "beguiling memoir by the novelist, playwright, essayist, film writer whose career began with I Can Get It for You Wholesale" -- but let's not forget the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for the musical "Fiorello!" This copy bears odd and interesting autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a fine 5½" X 8" photocopy of page 429 from Weidman's 1974 novel "Tiffany Street" that Weidman boldly signs in black fineline near the bottom and dates 11 June 1977, as well as changing a word in the text near the bottom (crossing out "at" and inking in "before") -- why he would alter a word in a published text is unclear!

(price-clipped) [a good solid copy, with minor shelfwear and light soiling to bottom edges; the Adler & Lubalin-designed jacket is bright and attractive despite numerous tiny edge-nicks (although with only minimal paper loss)]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in the upper left corner of the front endpaper: "9/12/40 / For Rose Wainess / Jerome Weidman." A chronicle of the author's trip around the world, undertaken from April to October of 1939 because he "wished to see the world before its face was completely changed. He set out just in time to see the last months of the great European democracies. He had no preconceived plan to write a travel book, but as he moved from country to country he felt it important to make notes of the undercurrents of impending excitement. [His book] is not a political survey, nor is it a Baedeker-like report of Things Seen and Places Visited. It is the travel book of a distinguished young American novelist who has a sense of humor and is aware of the little and great things that go on about him." He spent quite a bit of time in England (Plymouth and London, with a side trip to Edinburgh) and France (Paris, Marseilles, Juan-les-Pins) -- between one-third and one-half of the book -- before continuing across the Meditteranean to Egypt and points east (Arabia, India, Ceylon, Java, Australia, etc.), winding up at last in Honolulu. There is no indication that he even thought about going anywhere near Nazi Germany (or even Italy, for that matter) -- for a Jewish novelist, probably not a bad decision. Signed by Author.

A pair of typescripts signed by Jerome Weidman (1913-1998), the American novelist and playwright who received the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his work on Fiorello! (1959). The typescripts are for the short stories My Father Sits in the Dark (five pages) and And Everything Nice (eight pages). Both typescripts are signed in black ink by Weidman and dated August 3, 1976. The short stories were both collected in Weidman's book My Father Sits in the Dark (1961). Weidman is known for presenting a hard and unapologetic view of New York City; many of his short stories were published in The New Yorker. Both typescripts are in very good condition. Weidman's papers are at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
