It delves into the use of Dutch as the language of government, law, and literature, from the Middle Ages to the 16th century. The author presents a wealth of evidence, including official documents, legal texts, and literary works, to demonstrate the widespread use of Dutch as the language of the people. From royal decrees to city ordinances and religious tracts, Dutch served as the primary means of communication and record-keeping. The book also explores the role of Dutch literature in shaping the cultural identity of the Netherlands during this period. It discusses the works of prominent poets and historians, as well as popular genres such as morality plays and chronicles. These literary works reflect the social, political, and religious concerns of the time, providing valuable insights into the lives of ordinary people. By examining the language of government, law, and literature, this book sheds light on the complex relationship between language, power, and culture in the Netherlands during a pivotal period in its history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

modern leatherette. 8vo. modern leatherette. 61 pages and the four plates bound at the rear of the book. First edition. (Bigmore & Wyman III, 79). Rebound in later cloth. Dutch title page has been damaged, and subsiquently repairded, effecting the publisher and date. Interior is in fine condition. Text in French and Dutch. Was translated into English by Kubler in his HISTORICAL TREATISES . ON STEREOTYPING who claims that it is one of the two most important historical documents relating to the history of stereotyping. Westreenen was commissioned by the government to determine who had invented this process. He advances in a well-written manner the theory that D. Jean Mueller invented stereotyping and printed a Prayer Book in 1701 in Leyden using this process. The plates reproduce a page from this Prayer Book, a page from the first stereotyped Bible (1701) and a facsimile of a letter from Prosper Marchand stating that Mueller was the inventor of stereotyping. As Mueller did not actually use a mold but rather soldered actual type into a fixed form, Kubler says that his process was actually an intermediate step between printing from type and the stereotype as now known. From the Thomas M. Whitehead Collection of Books About Books.

"Containing the first full and authoritative account of the Muller stereotyping process, the earliest known (save the doubtful claim of Valleyre); preceeding Ged's experiments by a comfortable margin. It was overlooked or ignored by the 19th-century historians, who dismissed Muller's products as merely soldered forms of type metal. Its existence was unknown to me or my expert advisor when I was preparing William Ged and the Invention of Stereotype (The Library, 1960). Its significance was recognized (through Ellic Howe's copy) by Percy Muir in 1963"John Carter. Bigmore & Wyman, III. p.78.
