Hitchcock was a co-editor of The San Francisco Review and founder/editor of Kayak. Wexley was known for "They Shall Not Die" on the Scottsboro Boys and several screenplays including "Angels With Dirty Faces". Edward Dmytryk named him before HUAC.

Signed Association Copy: "In Tribute To Mildred Olmsted for her great contribution to human advancement, Helen Sobell". Mildred Olmsted held leadership positions in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom as well as the Pennsylvania chapter of the ACLU, which her husband, Judge Allen Seymour Olmsted, helped found. Helen Levitov Sobell petitioned, but was unable to save, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg from execution for espionage. Helen and her husband Morton Sobell were also accused of espionage, though Helen was never prosecuted. Her husband Morton was convicted and sentenced to thirty years. She fought to have his conviction overturned and even hosted the "Committee to Secure Justice for Morton Sobell" on May 15, 1956 at Carnegie Hall. There is a program from that event laid-in. This copy is a first edition, second printing, as stated on the copyright page. Published by Cameron & Kahn, New York, 1955. Measures 5.5" x 8.75", 672 pages including Index. The book is in very good condition. The boards and spine are very well preserved with minor edgewear. The binding is starting. The contents are gently toned, clean, bright, unmarked, and complete. Very Rare copy of this early 20th century American play, made even RARER as this was the personal copy of, and SIGNED by Dr. Allan Knight Chalmers who was the pastor of New York's Broadway Tabernacle Congregational Church, a pacifist, and a civil rights activist. Dr. Chalmers helped organize the defense of the Scottsboro Boys, became chairman of The Scottsboro Defense Committee, and later was the single most determined figure in having them paroled or released. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. acknowledged Chalmers, who taught King at the Boston University School of Theology, as an important influence in his intellectual development toward non-violence. Dr. Chalmers notes that he bought this copy at the "Theater after seeing performance, May 6, 1930" on the front flyleaf. A UNIQUE and RARE piece of Civil Rights memorabilia. SIGNED BY OWNER. Book.
