Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. GIFT-BOXED DREAMLIKE POETRY BOOK A finely preserved Chicago poetry gift book issued in an elegant Art Nouveau-style binding and retained in its original glassine protective wrapper and publisher's box. Written by Chicago businessman and early poetry patron James P…. Whedon, the volume reflects the refined decorative literary culture that surrounded the city's emerging modern poetry scene in the years preceding the founding influence of Harriet Monroe's 'Poetry' magazine circle. The book presents short lyrical verse paired with a delicate color frontispiece in a soft dreamlike palette. Surviving examples retaining both the original glassine and decorative gift box are uncommon in this condition, particularly in such clean, apparently unread state. The 1924 gift inscription further reinforces the book's original function as an intimate presentation volume. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small hardcover poetry gift book in publisher's pale blue and cream Art Nouveau decorative boards housed in the original matching publisher's box. Original glassine protective wrapper present. Measures approximately 4.75 x 7 inches. Pagination: 7-92 [1] pages. Color frontispiece illustration present. Title page printed in red and black. Publisher's device to title page. Gift inscription dated 1924 on the front free endpaper. CONDITION Fine in a Very Good Box. Book appears unread and remains exceptionally well preserved. Original glassine wrapper present with mild age-toning and light expected fragility. Decorative publisher's box remains very good with no splits or breaks observed. Minor scuffing to the author's name panel. An unusually attractive survival retaining both wrapper and box. Still gift quality. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - James P. Whedon was associated with Chicago literary and civic circles and is remembered as an early benefactor connected to the cultural environment surrounding 'Poetry' magazine. Volumes such as this illustrate the transitional literary world from which Chicago modernism emerged, balancing late Victorian sentiment with increasingly refined book design and artistic presentation. 'A Day and Its Dreams' reflects the genteel literary culture of early 20th-century Chicago, where privately circulated poetry and finely designed gift books occupied an important place between Victorian sentiment and emerging modernist aesthetics. Whedon's verse presents reflective, idealized themes of beauty, dreams, memory, and emotional refinement in a format intended as much for presentation as for reading. The visual presentation strongly reflects the lingering influence of Art Nouveau book design through its flowing organic cover motifs, restrained typography, and softly colored illustration. The survival of the publisher's box and glassine wrapper transforms the volume from a modest poetry book into a notably appealing decorative and collector object. SUBJECTS: Chicago poetry, James P. Whedon, Poetry magazine circle, Art Nouveau book design, boxed gift book, American poetry 1910s, decorative bindings, glassine wrapper, literary gift editions, Chicago literary history, small press poetry, illustrated poetry books, publisher's box, early 20th century American literature.
