Hardbound. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Description: Includes three maps and eleven b&w illustrations. This deals with a major feud that troubled American science for over a decade after the Civil War. Silliman, a noted mining consultant and cofounder of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, reported abundant evidence of oil in California. The existence of a store of mineral wealth other than gold claimed urgent attention in 1865 when rich placer deposits began to diminish. But Josiah Whitney, head of the California Geological Survey, discounted Silliman's findings with outspoken contempt. Silliman was not vindicated until many years after his death, and the dispute eventually involved even the National Academy of Sciences. BINDNG/CONDITION: charcoal gray cloth with gilt spine text; a Near Fine book, with a Near Fine dust jacket; the dust jacket is price clipped. index, notes. map endpapers. 8vo (about 8'' to 9.5'' tall). 272 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Gerald T. White's historical study of the origins of California's petroleum industry and the scientific controversy surrounding its development. The book examines the disputes among geologists, mining engineers, entrepreneurs, and other investigators attempting to understand the nature, extent, and commercial possibilities of California's early oil deposits. White traces the development of petroleum exploration in California during the nineteenth century, including competing geological theories, early drilling and mining efforts, and the conflicts surrounding Benjamin Silliman, Jr.'s involvement in the emerging western petroleum industry. The study places the beginnings of California oil within the broader histories of American science, geology, technology, and industrial development. Published by the Huntington Library in 1968. Illustrated with maps and historical material, including map endpapers showing important early petroleum regions and sites in the American West. Condition: Very Good in Good original dust jacket. Hardcover binding remains sound with light shelf and age wear. Interior appears clean and securely bound with mild age toning. Map endpapers remain clean and attractive. Original cream and blue printed dust jacket shows general age toning and soiling, rubbing, edge wear, small chips and short tears at corners and spine extremities, and scattered handling marks. Jacket spine is noticeably toned but lettering remains clear. Jacket remains substantially complete and presentable. Please refer closely to photographs for condition. An appealing first-edition source for collectors and researchers interested in California history, petroleum, geology, mining, energy history, industrial development, history of science, and the American West. The Huntington Library publication and combination of scientific and industrial history give the work particular relevance to specialized Western Americana and history-of-technology collections. Book will be carefully packed and protected for shipment. USPS Media Mail available for domestic orders. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' 30-day return policy. SCI 3a.

Hardcover. First Impression. Demy duodecimo, [15.5cm/6.2inches], full Mystic blue pictorial cloth, sans dust jacket, pp. 147. Illustrated with b-w halftones and pen & ink sketches; glossary subsequent to text. Lightly, -and quite comfortably-, worn on extremities, [i. e. corners]; otherwise in exceptionally good condition. A little gem of a book. . The monthly Rudder Magazine for Yachtsmen was first published in 1891 and ceased publication in June 1977. The magazine's founder and first editor, Thomas Fleming Day, born Somerset, England in March 1861, died 19 August 1927 at his home in Harlem, New York, was working in 1890 as a boat salesman for a shop on Dey Street in New York which also produced a catalog of nautical wares. His employer thought that "getting out a little paper" and charging for advertising space would be more lucrative than producing all those free catalogs. Mr Day obliged.
