First collected edition, 2 volumes bound in full dark brown diced calf, marbled page edges and marbled endpapers, four engraved plates, the two of birds being colored; internally near Fine, clean tight and unmarked; outer binding joints leather is split but covers are firm, one spine label missing to Vol. I, still a clean and quite nice set.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. First Collected Edition. 2 volumes. viii,392; 300pp, index, 4 engraved plates (2 handcoloured, 2 folding). Contemporary marbled boards with leather spines and vellum corners. Some minor rubbing to covers with small chip at bottom of spine, there are signs of cracks staring on the spines. Some occasional and mostly minor foxing, heavier on page edges of volume 2. Small stain on rear blanks and index pages at internal margin. Small copperplate bookplate of William Leatham on front pastedown in each volume, and likewise his signature to the front free endpaper of each. Front hinge of Vol 1 just starting. Boards of Volume 2 reattached.The first folding plate has some offset to itself (birds legs). Overall a most pleasing set of uniform appearance. Volume 1 has engraved frontis and a folding plate of a gall. Volume 2 has a folding colour frontis of a bird, and a further full page hand coloured plate of a bird. This is the first collected edition and comprises mainly White's most famous work The Natural History of Selborne, originally published in 1798, in what is essentially its second edition. While the Works omits the Antiquities, it does have A Calendar and Observations by W. Markwick added. Size: 8vo.
