La matriz de estos cuentos de terror se encuentra en la vida del propio Henry S. Whitehead, quien a comienzos de los años veinte emprendió su labor como diácono en la región de Santa Cruz, en las Islas Vírgenes. Allí quedó fascinado por las costumbres locales, los ritos vudú y las supersticiones acerca de zombis y vampiros, fuertemente arraigadas en el folklore de las Antillas.
