Viel Komisches birgt die Kunst, sei es in derben Schilderungen des Bauernlebens oder ironischen Inszenierungen antiker Mythen, sei es in politischen Karikaturen oder in grotesken Skulpturen. Doch das Komische ist relativ es findet sich zwar zu allen Zeiten in der Kunst, nicht immer wird jedoch in gleicher Weise darüber gelacht. In der Renaissance etwa befürworteten die Kunsttheoretiker dann eine komische Bildwirkung, wenn die Figuren anregen, mit ihnen zu lachen.
