This book presents an extensive investigation into the atomic weights of silver, lithium, and chlorine to discover the most accurate method of determining the atomic weight of silver, as the uncertainty in its weight causes confusion and uncertainty throughout the whole table of atomic weights. The researchers were successful in designing a process to determine this weight more accurately than in any previous investigation. By using a salt of silver and oxygen which contained a third element, thereby greatly magnifying the results, the most suitable starting point was determined to be lithium perchlorate. From there, an extraordinarily precise process was developed to determine the oxygen in the perchlorate, along with a method to determine the ratio of lithium chloride to silver chloride and to silver. To ensure accuracy, the materials were purified to the utmost degree and the analysis was completed in quartz and platinum vessels. The research resulted in a far more accurate value for the atomic weight of silver, which led to greater precision in the atomic weights of many other elements as well.
