Overall, very sound and presentable. Publisher's note: The Oxford Bible Pictures consist of thirty-four illuminated miniatures depicting biblical events from the fall of the Rebel Angels to the Last Judgment. This is one of the few known works attributed to William de Brailes, an illuminator whose identity was only discovered in the twentieth century, and who worked in Oxford in the middle of the thirteenth century. Dazzling in their pictorial invention and sparkling in their execution, these small miniatures are superb examples of early English Gothic art. . [The author] discusses their significance in the history of psalter illustration, their place in the work of de Brailes, and their function in the thirteenth century. 136 pp. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Add to basketWilliam de Brailes (illustrator). Folio Society, limited edition, lettered J hors commerce of 480 copies (includes commentary volume as issued). Printed on vellum by Damiani, Bologna. William de Brailes was a leading figure in the flourishing of English manuscript illumination in the 13th century. One of the few illuminators to sign his work, his name appears in records between circa 1230 and 1260, making him the best-documented artist of his era. Little is known of his personal life, other than that he lived and worked in Oxford and was married - a curious detail in light of two self-portraits in a tonsure, suggesting monastic vows. De Brailes's extraordinary skill as both artist and craftsman is evident in seven surviving leaves from a Psalter completed around 1240. Considered the finest examples of his work, six leaves are held by the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and one by the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. These leaves showcase his originality of design, precision of execution, and remarkable technical skill - some of the minute scroll lettering would have required a single-hair brush, while his layering of colour produces depth and luminosity. Beyond technical mastery, his scenes demonstrate a deep understanding of biblical iconography. Leaves from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge: Fall of the Rebel Angels Scenes from Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel Last Judgement Wheel of Fortune Christ and David Tree of Jesse Leaf from the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York: Early Life of Christ.
