Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. The book is in very good condition, a fair amount of shelf rubbing, small price sticker still affixed to back cover which at some point was marked out in black, small tear at bottom between front cover and spine but spine still firmly affixed, minor staining to cover from age, and small stain on fore-edge. Apart from some writing from a previous owner on how they received book on back of cover and the author's signature on the title page the text and images inside appear clean and clear throughout. 'This extremely short little book finds Burroughs in his funniest, clearest and most vicious voice with a brief introduction and four grotesque, pointed and politically themed "routines" that walk the line between essays and short stories.' 54 pages. 5 x 7 inches. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 306 pages. Published in 1983. The second novel of the author's so-called "American" Trilogy. One of William S. Burroughs' finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that went into multiple subsequent printings. The dazzling wraparound DJ design reproduces the great portrait-photograph of white Americans dressed - that is, under-dressed and nearly naked - as Native Americans, culled from the Colorado State Historical Society Archives. Presents William S. Burroughs' "The Place of Dead Roads". The weirdest, and also most accomplished, novel of his late-career trilogy. Although not originally intended as such, it is now seen as the second novel of the latter, which begins with "Cities of The Red Night" (1981) and concludes with "The Western Lands" (1987). "Chronicles the story of a gunfighter in the American West, beginning with the gunfighter's death in 1899, incorporating contrasting themes and time-travel episodes, and making use of Burroughs' extensive knowledge of firearms. Non-linear in construction, it makes use of vivid imagery and repetition, but does not employ the famous cut-up method of literary collage used in his earlier novels". Burroughs was not a public figure/activist in his coeval Norman Mailer's mold. On the contrary, he was a peripatetic world traveller who remained an elusive enigma until the end. But he had the uncanny ability - in a way that Mailer himself acknowledged he lacked - to describe America's existential predicament in concrete, pithy prose that reflected his lifelong concerns as a writer: The collusion between science and the state, the dangers of totalitarianism in the present form of uncontrolled technology, and the prospect of annihilation through nuclear war. "The greatest satirical writer since Jonathan Swift" (Jack Kerouac). "The most important writer to emerge since the Second World War" (J. G. Ballard - who was massively influenced by Burroughs). "The only American writer who may be conceivably possessed by genius" (Norman Mailer). An absolute "must-have" title for William S. Burroughs collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by William S. Burroughs. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as many copies available online are. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are in multiple subsequent printings. Signed William S. Burroughs, especially of "Naked Lunch", are quite scarce and command thousands of dollars, rightly so. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy. One of the most influential writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. ISBN 0030632560. Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Signed by William S. Burroughs in black ink on half-title page. A fine copy of the first printing hardcover in jacket. xviii, 332 pages. Fantasy novel involving the Spanish conquest of the New World (among other topics). 'First Edition' and number line from 1 to 2 on title page verso. William S. Burroughs (1914-97) was born in the Midwest, and graduated from Harvard with an art degree in 1936. He was often a rascal, notorious for his addiction to heroin, and the shooting of his wife at a party in Mexico (the so-called 'William Tell' incident). He'd worked and played in Vienna, Paris, London, Tangiers, Chicago, Mexico, and New York before finally retiring to Lawrence, Kansas in the 1990s, where he died. He stood the literary establishment on its ear in 1959 with the publication of his Beat classic Naked Lunch. During the 1980s, Burroughs combined his predilection for firearms with his desire to paint. His 'gunshot paintings' were nearly as controversial in the art world as Naked Lunch had been in the literary world decades earlier.Decorative Title Page, Headpieces and Endpapers (brown/black/white).
