On piece of paper roughly 2.5 x 7.5 cm. Mounted on piece of 7.5 x 13 cm card. In fair condition, with both card and paper aged and slightly discoloured. Good firm underlined signature ('W E Gladstone'). The card carries the following caption, in a contemporary hand: 'Autograph of | The Right Honorable William Ewart Gladstone, M.P., | Premier Minister and | Chancellor of the Exchequer.'.

The recto carries the franked address, trimmed close, reading 'London July twenty 1835. | Roundell Palmer Esq | Mixbury | Birmingham [corrected in another hand to 'Magdalen Colle | Oxford'], signed in bottom left-hand corner 'W E Gladstone'. Fragment of letter, on reverse, reads ' himself professes | ardly to the fall | & what I fear | an involuntary | Wickamites will | to the infinite | own. However | ? - Everything | ably. I heartily | you would, I '.

Hard back binding in publisher's original deep blue cloth covers, gilt title lettering and tools to the spine, symmetrical black lines to the front and rear covers, all page edges gilt, bevelled edges, pale blue end papers. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. Contains tipped-in really clear photographic frontispiece of William Gladstone by The London Stereoscopic and Photographic company, [xv] 311 printed pages of text with engraved headers and tail-pieces. Light marks to the covers, hinges sound and in Very Good clean and bright condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. GOVERNMENT & POLITICS.

First edition hard back binding in half navy calf covers, six gilt raised cross bands to the spine, gilt title and author lettering on deep burgundy morocco to one compartment, rich navy marble covers and page edges. Quarto. 11'' x 9''. Contains [viii] [x] [4] 168 printed pages of text with 42 single-sided monochrome engravings throughout. List of Subscribers. From the library and private estate of Sir John Gladstone [1764-1851] Father of William Gladstone [1809-1898], British Liberal Statesman and Prime Minister, with the Fasque House [a derivative of a Gaelic word simply meaning shelter] book plate to the front paste down. Just a little sporadic foxing to the first 30 pages, one small tear to the top inner gutter of page 23, very minor rubs to the extremities, without any ownership markings, binding firm, square and sound, and in Very Good clean and presentable condition.
